Guasha, also called “scraping sha-bruises”, is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. Skin is typically lubricated with massage oil first, then the smooth edge of a well-worn coin is placed against the oiled skin surface, pressed down firmly, and moved down the muscles along the surface of the skin, ultimately forming bruising on the skin. This causes extravasation of blood from the peripheral capillaries and may result in sub-cutaneous blemishing, which usually takes 2–4 days to fade. Guasha is a type of external treatment, that releases unhealthy elements from injured areas and stimulates detoxification, blood flow, and healing according to TCM principle.
